Hahndorf sits in the Adelaide Hills, 28 kilometres south-east of the city, and it looks like a storybook version of a German village transplanted to the Australian bush. Which is exactly what it is. In 1838, a shipload of Lutheran families fleeing religious persecution in Prussia sailed into Port Adelaide aboard the Zebra. Their Danish captain, Dirk Hahn, personally negotiated their land, and they named their new home after him.
