The scene:
One Thursday morning, every second year, a quiet back-street square in Tanunda turns into a goat market.

Auctioneers in period costume climb onto the back of a flatbed truck. Mettwurst is sold by the yard. There is Rote Grütze made with sago and red grape juice, and the whole thing finishes with the sale of an actual goat.

This year there was one lot nobody expected: a bundle of cuttings taken from an ancestor-vine block — old wood, the kind of vine material that money can’t really buy. It was carried into the square at eight. By ten it was gone.

The crate turned up by the cottages, empty, its newspaper lining still damp. Nobody in Tanunda will say a word against a neighbour, but everybody has a theory.
