🔮 Mystery Journey

Barossa Gold and Wine Tour

You’ll stand in the diggings where the shafts and mullock heaps are still sitting in the scrub, whisper to someone a hundred and forty metres away across a curved dam wall and be heard perfectly, drink in a pub where a projectionist still turns up on Saturdays if you believe the locals, and put your hand on shiraz vines planted in 1847 that are still producing.
It finishes at an estate where a barrel of wine has been set aside every year since 1878 without a single year missed — the only cellar on earth releasing a hundred-year-old wine every twelve months. The gold never made anyone in this valley rich. Come and find out what did.

Drive History/Food/Drink 🔮 Mystery 🎧 Narration 📍 Barossa Valley Region

Explore The Barossa in a different way with food & wine mixed in with nature and exploration.

In 1868 the publican of the Sandy Creek Hotel found gold in the country beyond Cockatoo Valley. Over four thousand people rushed the hills. The field gave up roughly 50,000 ounces all told, then went quiet — the easy metal ran out fast, and what was left needed capital most diggers didn’t have.

In 1896 a man named L.R. Menzies arrived with exactly that. He formed the Menzies Barossa Gold Mining Syndicate on £16,000, sank tunnels, laid a tramway, and installed a forty-head stamp battery built by James Martin & Co of Gawler. On 9 March 1898 the acting Premier started the machines in front of a crowd of invited guests. Menzies had promised seventy-six ounces a week. The first crush produced seventy-four ounces.

The company was liquidated in January 1899. Plant, buildings and leases sold for about £3,000. The leases were cancelled in 1901. Somewhere between the prospectus and the scrub, roughly £13,000 evaporated.

This journey follows the money. Walk the diggings that swallowed it, stop at a dam wall that carries a whisper, then climb north into the wine districts — because the fortune that survived in this valley was never the one that came out of the ground. It was the one that went into the dirt and waited. The journey ends in a cellar where a barrel has been laid down every single year since 1878, unbroken, and is still waiting.
