Colonel William Light ยท 1839
“The reasons that led me to fix Adelaide where it is I do not expect to be generally understood or calmly judged of at present. I leave it to posterity to decide whether I am entitled to praise or to blame.”
He died three years after founding the city, at fifty-three, without ever explaining himself.
About This Game Journey
Historians give four reasons. Light hinted at a fifth.
You’re standing at the heart of Adelaide. In 1836, a man named William Light placed a city here. He surveyed over a thousand kilometres of coastline, rejected every other site, and staked his career on this exact spot. The establishment wanted the capital at the harbour. Light refused. He resigned rather than move the city.
Historians say he chose this spot for four practical reasons: fresh water from the Torrens, access to a harbour, fertile soil, and protection from flooding. But Light himself said the reasons were not “generally understood.” There was a fifth reason โ one he couldn’t explain in 1839.
Your job is to find it.
Each of you walks a different direction from Victoria Square. Each direction holds different pieces of the story. Share everything you find via group chat, track each other on the map, and piece together what Light knew but couldn’t explain. The city is the puzzle. The answer is under your feet.
